ACA Myths Dispelled

The ACA and Health Insurance in Wilmington NC

The law that is officially called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law on March 23, 2010. This article will take a quick look at some of the ACA myths that have been surrounding the bill.

Myth Number 1 - The Affordable Care Act Causes Premiums to Rise

Some have made the claim that the ACA has caused the average premium to rise by at least 25% since its rollout. This claim is based on the calculations of non-profit group the National Bureau of Economic Research.

In fact, while the average premium as measured across every state did rise by about 24% in 2014, over 80% of the residents of at least 37 states qualified for tax credits that average over $100 every month. This has resulted in most people paying less than $100 per month for their health care plans, which is an overall decrease in costs. This includes people living in Wilmington NC

Myth Number 2 - The ACA has Hurt job Growth

Many politicians have claimed that the ACA has resulted in job losses or reductions in the number of hours offered by employers.

In fact, since the Affordable Care Act was passed in March of 2010, the unemployment rate has fallen from about 10% to around 5.5 %. It is hard to say how much of this progress can be attributed to the passage of the ACA, but it is probably safe to say that the ACA has not resulted in mass job loss.

Myth Number 3 - The ACA has Increased the Deficit

The rhetoric of pundits and politicians have given many Americans the misconception that Obamacare has made the deficit worse.

In fact, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has revised its initial estimate of the expected costs of the ACA, now saying that the government will need to spend 20% less on health care subsidies than was originally projected. In addition, Medicaid costs will be $73 billion less that expected.
