Facts About Under-26 Health Coverage

If a plan covers children, your parents can add you to or be kept on your parent's health insurance policy until you turn 26 years old.

You can join or remain on your parent's plan even if you are:
  • Married
  • Not living with your parents
  • Attending school
  • Not financially dependent on your parents
  • Eligible to enroll in your employer’s plan

What to Do When You Turn 26

Under-26 coverage ends on your 26th birthday.
  • When you lose coverage on your 26th birthday, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This lets you enroll in a health plan outside Open Enrollment.
  • You can enroll up to 60 days before your 26th birthday. Your Special Enrollment Period ends 60 days after your birthday.
  • If you enroll before your birthday, coverage can start as soon the first day of the month you lose coverage. If you enroll during the 60 days after your birthday, coverage can start the first day of the month after picking a plan.
  • If you don’t enroll in health coverage within 60 days of your birthday, you may not be able to get coverage until the next Open Enrollment period.
  • If you aren't insured, you may have to pay the fee that some uninsured people pay. If you're uncovered for less than 3 months of the calendar year, you don’t have to pay the fee.
