When the Affordable Care Act was successfully initiated in January of 2014, the landscape of American healthcare underwent a massive shift. Under the new guidelines, every American must now be insured or face tax consequences. This change resulted in insurance providers having to offer a number of different alternatives so healthcare plans can be afforded by a variety of income levels. BCBSNC is proud to offer affordable health insurance in Wilmington NC in the form of three distinct plans designed to meet the needs of a full spectrum of consumers.

Here, we offer a closer look at each of our three Blue health plans so you can choose the one that best meets your needs and budget.

Blue Advantage

Blue Advantage is BCBSNC's most comprehensive health insurance plan. With this plan, 91% of doctors and 99% of hospitals in the state are covered and policy holders will be covered in 100% of North Carolina's counties, across the United States, and around the world. Blue Advantage is best suited to those individuals who want choices and greater flexibility in how much they have to pay for doctor visits and prescription drugs. The plan is available in Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tier levels with each progressive tier paying for more of the policy holder's medical expenses.

Under the Blue Advantage plan, preventative care is covered 100% and policy holders have the highest number of pharmacy and prescription drug options. Blue Advantage policy holders are also eligible for a tax-deductible Health Savings Account (HSA).

Blue Select

Blue Select health plans are available in Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiered plans with each tier offering greater coverage options than the one below it. This plan features an expansive network of providers and a savings of up to 6% over comparable plans under the Blue Advantage umbrella. This is a copayment plan, so the policy holder's medical expenses will be more predictable. The pharmacy network is slightly limited compared to the Blue Advantage plan, but this is intentional so as to save the subscriber money. Blue Select plans also require more pre-authorizations for select prescription drug benefits.

Blue Select health plans are best suited for those who want a less expensive health insurance option without compromising the flexibility and ease of access to BCBSNC's network of providers. Blue Select offers two tiers of in-network benefits in addition to out-of-network coverage. Members are free to choose providers from either tier or out-of-network, but by choosing a Tier 1 provider, the member will receive greater benefits and more savings.

Blue Value

BCBSNC's Blue Value health plans offer the most cost-effective coverage available. With a savings of up to 9% over Blue Advantage, Blue Value provides flexible coverage at a great price. Of course, in order to account for the cost savings, members will have access to a more limited network of providers and pharmacies and more prescription drugs will require pre-authorization prior to being approved for coverage. Preventative care is still covered 100% with this plan and members have the convenience of choosing between two types of payment coverage options for their medical expenses: copayments, and deductible and coinsurance plans.

Blue Value health plans are also available in four tiered levels and eligible for HSAs, just like Blue Advantage, making this plan a good fit for those who want the least expensive health insurance plan possible. Blue Value is also best suited to those members who don't have a strong provider preference or whose provider is already in the limited network.
